If I had to choose one of my most memorable holiday experiences, my time at the Four Seasons Tented Camp in Chiang Saen, Thailand would definitely make the list. Located in the Golden Triangle, where the Mekong River divides Laos, Burma and Thailand, the Four Seasons is the perfect place for an adventurous traveller looking for a once in a lifetime experience (but not for families as kids under the age of 10 are not allowed). You can travel to the Four Seasons from the Chiang Rai Airport via connecting flight from the Bangkok Airport or a four hour car ride. The resort has 15 different tents that can be booked and all of them include full board, all meals, drinks and a mini bar. The menu includes delicious and authentic Thai food but international cuisines are also available if you prefer. The entire resort is an amazing wildlife experience – there is an elephant sanctuary that is home to rescued elephants that the Four Seasons take care of so the elephants can live a stress free life. Besides staying in the beautiful tents, activities offered include trekking with elephants through out the day, breakfast at the peak with a sunrise elephant trek, bathing elephants, aMekong river ride and mahout training (elephant training). The Opium Museum and Golden Triangle Park are also nearby.

This trip stands out in my memory because the attention to detail during every experience is something worth mentioning. The service is impeccable and the decor is amazing. Although there’s a rustic feeling to the tent accommodations, the whole experience is ‘glamping’ at its finest. I felt like I was out in the wild and never found myself bored or wondering what I needed to do next. But besides the amazing spa and the beautiful environment, my favorite part was hands down the elephants. I’ve always admired them and thought that I’d need to visit Africa to witness the majestic creatures, but I made my own elephant friend in Thailand.

Spending time with elephants is only the tip of the iceberg at the Tented Camp. I spent four days with my elephant and during this time, I learned about it’s personality and habits. They’re extremely gentle and kind yet strong and regal. Every time we left the elephants to do something else, I was always looking forward to my next experience with them. The entire stay is perfect for families and couples. This trip will be on my mind for a long time.
