It’s never easy to find authentic Japanese food in London, let alone one with quality ingredients and reasonably affordable price tags. The much loved Jidori, the Japanese yakitori and small plates restaurant, opened its first door since 2 years ago in Dalston, it has finally opened its second site in Covent Garden.

Spread over three floors of a Georgian terrace on Catherine Street in the heart of Theatreland, Jidori can seat approximately 50 diners and will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. The design takes inspiration from the vibrant restaurant and bar scene of Tokyo, where the streets are a maze of tiny drinking dens and restaurants split over multiple levels. The restaurant features a communal dining table designed exclusively for the restaurant by Artist John Booth,  and a karaoke room on the lower ground floor for private parties of up to 12.  Working with Lucky Voice, the carefully crafted playlists with over 8,000 songs available to choose from, the karaoke room is a unique spot to hold a party. A family-style set menu including Karaoke starting at £40 per head will be offered. Drinks and extra dishes can be ordered through a wall-mounted iPad. Fun!

 

Owners Natalie Lee-Joe & Brett Redman have worked with Head Chef Shunta Matsubara to create a number of new dishes inspired by the ‘specials board’ at Jidori in Dalston, serving alongside signature dishes such as Tsukune yakitori (minced chicken with egg yolk) and crowd favourites such as the Katsu curry Scotch egg, Okra-nomiyaki and the “dessert of the year” Ginger ice cream with miso caramel and sweet potato crisps.

 

On top of an extended menu that includes artisan sake, craft beers and classic cocktails with a twist, Jidori’s summer favourite ‘Frozen yuzu margarita & togarashi salt’ is also available on the menu. They have recently launched the omakase menu takes you on a personal journey through memories of food from Head Chef Shunta Matsubara’s home in Tokyo, Japan.

Designed to share between two, the Omakase menu costs only £30 per person excluding drinks. A menu of 3 snacks, 10 skewers and a dessert that includes baby radish Tsukemono pickles made from Shunta’s Grandmother’s recipe, tuna sashimi served on tempura nori, Jidori’s take on edamame with grilled peas served in their pods topped with shavings of fresh horseradish and grilled maitake mushrooms, yakitori and coconut sorbet is something that you will not forget for a very long time. Pairing with Japanese draft beer, sake and Japan inspired cocktails, sounds like a very great evening with friends to me!
