Earlier I took a holiday to Northern Spain with my best friends, and made a visit to Bilbao. I have heard so much about the city but never been. So we stayed at the Miró hotel for 2 nights, which is just across the road of where the world famous Guggenheim Museum locates. About 20 mins from the airport by car, 8 mins from the bus terminal, the hotel is close to almost everything in the city.

As one of the Design Hotels, I was expecting the hotel to be very stylish and chic, and it did not disappoint me. With a revamp project of the entire Bilbao city 3 years after Guggenheim Museum was opened, and inspired by the New York concept of boutique hotels, born during the 80 ́s and created by hotelier (and ex-owner of Studio 54) Ian Schrager, the Miró Hotel was built at one of the prime location to cater the needs of the city.

Lobby 2

Designed by fashion designer Antonio Miró and interior designer Pilar Líbano, the Miró is the first boutique hotel in the city.  Clean and simple design with lots of space and natural lights coming in throughout the lobby. Situated between the Guggenheim and Fine Arts Museums, Hotel Miró counts with a magnificent contemporary photography collection of over 40 works. Photographs are not mere decoration, they are part of the whole experience. Images of milk by Concha Prada can be seen at the restaurant, and in the courtesy bar there is a moving image of travellers by Marc Viaplana. There are also little design elements throughout the hotel which looks as if they are for decoration.

You need to look onto the floor to find the room number. The 50 rooms are also decorated in neutral colours creating a relaxing vibe. The hotels ́ own design elements like the double sided mirrors and the white leather sofas combine functionality and design at its best. Bathrooms can be integrated into the room by a simple drawing of the curtain.

My friends and I loved the Courtesy Bar which offers drinks and snacks throughout the day, where it is also a lounging area to wait around, sort out where to go and just chill.

Breakfast at the hotel is a little different. They offer “The Brown Bread Bag”, recovering the tradition with a personalized and professional table service instead of buffet.

The Brown Bread Bag is a unique gastronomic experience of local products controlled from the beginning to the end, thus ensuring the quality of the food, its provenance and immediate distribution. Breakfast is includes eggs by Basque farmhouse eggs, seasonal fruit jams from Orduña, different types of true hand-crafted breads (Rustic bread, Linen bread and German bread), authentic artisanal croissant, natural honey from Urdaibai, Idiazabal cheese, fresh tomato, 100% natural butter and freshly squeezed orange juice.

I love the design of the brown bag- each one of us get a bag, and my favourite is of course the croissant. Bread taste really home-made and fluffy warm…what a good start in the morning. we also ordered some hot dishes from the menu, eggs with ham, omelette, boiled eggs etc…

“Boutique hotels” refer to small hotels with services of a grand hotel. At the Miró Hotel, there are bikes and umbrellas ready for guests to use at anytime. The staff speaks very good English, and they are extremely friendly and helpful. We did not manage to get tickets for the Guggenheim Museum prior to arrival and time was tight, the hotel staff sorted that out for us in less than 20 mins! We also got lots of recommendations on local restaurants and places to visit in the city at the reception desk, where they would go as far to make a booking, cancel a reservation and basically do anything for us to make it as easy as possible. I mean, in the end when you’re on vacation, how great it is to have someone local who is happy to help and making sure the trip is smooth?
