The last French Queen Marie Antoinette, possibly one of the most controversial women in history, might or might not have said the phrase ‘Let them eat cake ‘during the outbreak of French Revolution. Yet her life in court and her stories had always been fascinating and intriguing. Inspired by the opulence of Marie Antoinette’s court, Pont St. restaurant in Belgravia neighbourhood launched this elegant afternoon tea.

The menu includes savouries such as Foie Gras on Brioche Toast, Cheese Balls with Quince and Hollandaise Quail Egg Tartlets. Sweet treats such as Champagne Lychee Jelly with Rosewater Cream, Absinthe Choux and Chocolate Opera Cake sit alongside classic scones with jam and clotted cream….So I went with a friend, and the portion they served for two was so much that I had to almost starve myself for 2 days in order to be able to finish the whole set. Which sadly we couldn’t, but I had a try of each and every piece, they are just delicious!

We had been given a box of edible pearls flavoured with rose or raspberry,  it is for adding into the Ruinart champagne (one of the oldest Champagne houses in France) to complement the flavour, and some fun too.

It is indeed the best way to spend a relaxing long weekend with a friend or two. Just indulge yourself in the elegant cakes and pastries, chatting over a glass of champagne…what a life! Let them eat cake!
