During my time in Morocco, my mantra was to engage – engage all five senses in every experience to fully remember and experience the beauty and culture of the place. The engagement at Scarabeo Camp was memorable and breathtaking. From the sandy sights to the calming sounds, every sense is entertained in a majestic and picturesque way. Located 45 minutes from Marrakech, Scarabeo Camp has facilities in their “Stone Desert” experience in Agafay, or try their mobile camp experience that lets you plan where to go. A 35 kilometer drive will transport you from the hustling city to a sandy getaway that will fulfill your Lawrence of Arabia desires and leave you hungry for the Sahara Desert. At the site, you’ll be welcomed by large white tents, all thoughtfully designed to house a queen bed with rugs and blankets and an en suite bathroom area. The word camp doesn’t do it justice but effectively inspires the thrill and adventure that comes with camping.

I made sure to spend as much time lounging and reading and soaking up the whole environment. The burnt orange sound and the never ending, clear blue skies were exhilarating sights for a peaceful day. Besides the occasional wind breeze, the calming silence was music to my ears. And after a delicious lunch filled with various salads and local bread, I did some horseback riding. Although the feeling of wind blowing through your hair is a liberating experience, there is nothing comparable to the wind blowing through your hair as you gallop freely on a horse through the desert. With the horse and the vast landscape, it was easily the perfect afternoon. Back on site, hot pots of mint tea are a routine way of life in Morocco, but every sip is just a fulfilling as the first, and the dusk comes too soon. Dinner is friendly and thoughtful, consistent with the service throughout the entire experience, followed by stargazing with the most passionate astronomer I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. The entire area feels still and the spectacular sky seems magnified in the desert. It was unreal to see the stars and planets up close and get a lesson on all of the constellations. The whole experience is ingrained in my memory – taste, touch, sound, sight, and smell, but it has definitely left me eager to return to Morocco.
