Ok, maybe it’s not so secret anymore. The Puli Hotel and Spa , opened in 2009, is still one of my favourite hotels in Shanghai.

The PuLi Exterior Shot

This is my second time staying at the hotel, and I still manage to get lost around the area and could not find the entrance. Tucked in the middle of Jing’An district, it is actually as well-connected as it can get, the hotel is a little oasis amongst the buzzing city. There are 193 rooms and 36 suites, a restaurant, a bar , a Health Club that equipped with state of the art gymnasium, sauna, steam room, experiential showers, jacuzzi pool, 25-metre lap infinity pool as well as the first Anantara Spa in Shanghai. Everything one needs under one roof over 26 floors,  no wonder the Puli is the first luxury urban resort in Shanghai. I particularly love all the floor to ceiling windows that allows a lot of natural sunlight in.

4.1 Deluxe suite living room
My room was a one-bedroom suite, with a spacious living room and gorgeous view over the city. The contrast of the busy traffic outside and the tranquility inside the room is quite interesting.

I quite like the The Phénix Restaurant in the hotel, a good variety of breakfast (especially for those who prefer chinese cuisine), they serve a delicate afternoon tea which is just about the right portion for that mid-afternoon snack temptation. Speaking of breakfast, there are actually four options – a la carte or buffet selection at PHÉNIX Eatery & Bar, continental express breakfast at the Long Bar , a lazy and comfortable in-room breakfast or “breakfast on-the-go”.  The 32m Long Bar, which I sometimes think it is an extension of the reception, is such a brilliant idea. While you wait, why not have a drink? and, choosing from one of Shanghai’s “longest” wine and champagne by-the-glass selections does help killing time, or at least, make the waiting less “boring”.

It is no surprise that the hotel is constantly on a high-demand full house situation. The constant in and out of guests, restaurant and bar quickly filling up, I was almost certain the Spa must have been full. I was lucky enough to squeeze in a last minute Spa treatment in the evening, to which I felt that was the best decision I’ve ever made on that day.

2. Single Treatment Room

The Anantara spa has only 5 treatment rooms. (yes, 5!!!), yet occupying almost half of the entire floor. As soon as I walked in, it was almost like being transported to another place. The high ceilings, the dim lighting, the extremely attentive service puts anyone at ease and in a relaxing mode. My treatment was divine, because my therapist listened and was so good at what she does, she made sure everything from the lighting, the music, the heat, the pressure and the exact pressure point was precisely what I wanted. That was a 90mins well-spent. My verdict? You can skip the bar and decide to go out for a night out if you prefer, you can do breakfast your own way, but, do give the Spa a go, book yourself a pampering treatment, you will be glad you did.

Asia has been known for its high efficiency and world class service. At The Puli, you can experience both to a point where they are sometimes one step ahead of me. (i.e., everything is already ready when you walk over to check in and out, someone is already calling a taxi for you as soon as you said you need one, your suitcase is already in the car boot so as soon as you are done, you can walk out and hop on the car and go). It is really no surprise that the hotel is full of international guests, including those travelling from other world class Asian countries.
