I don’t know about you, but I get a pretty good snapshot of most ladies I meet through their accessories. I like girls who curate their arm candy, especially when each piece tells a whimsical story. What’s better than to ask an accessories designer on their take on accessories obsession? Couple of months ago, I caught up with local bag label MISCHA’s Michelle Li to see what she’s got up her arm. The Travel Series turn 4 this week, Michelle, armed with a giant tote bag, showed me her collection of bags and accessories over tea.

INSPIRATION: I asked if she had an obsession over something, Michelle exclaimed that it wasn’t handbags or jewelry but hexagons! She noticed that all images and pieces she’s been buying and photographing mostly had elements of this curious 6 sided shape. In Japanese culture, it represents the tortoise shell which is also a symbol of longevity. Resonating to her studies in Japanese during high school days, the obsession turned into MISCHA’s signature print for her Travel Series, and a hit collection is born!
THE VERY FIRST EVER: This eye-popping origami patterned obi red clutch is not just any impulse buy, this is Michelle’s triumphant milestone, the very first bag she’s ever made, all sewn by hand and by herself. This nifty crafter has sewn more than 40 odd bags before she started looking for manufacturers.
OLD SKOOL MISCHA: This is another MISCHA vintage (Michelle asked? Can I call my old pieces “vintage”? haha) Still embossed with her old logo that’s been phased out, this exotic skin dumpling clutch is lined with swirly Japanese kimono silk. Gorgeous.
BIRTHDAY GIFT: Besides her own designs, Michelle also has 2 particularly memorable bags in her closet. This suede clutch is a fabulous birthday gift from Nathan Jenden, Creative Director of Diane von Frustenberg.
OTHER MEMORABLE BAGS: Besides rocking her own pieces, Michelle does venture out to the designer bag territory. This Chanel 2.55 classic little black bag was a purchase made in 2007/2008, she saved her hard-earned money for this particular coveted piece. Sadly, she’s now a retiree, and only back at work when Michelle visits Paris.
FAVORITE JEWELRY FINDS: Michelle’s favorite accessory finds are actually from her jewelry designing friends or from vintage markets all around the world. The gold cuff on her right arm (left in photo) is from a French/Swiss designer friend Marijoli. Her left arm (right in photo) boasts a string of Buddha beads made out of mala ivory. The linked bracelet is an antique market buy from New York. The rings are Greek finds from a small island called Paros. (Photographed with MISCHA Travel Clutch (HK$890)）
MONOGRAM LOVE: We’re done with tea now and she’s packed up all her goodies, and of course a bag designer would only carry her load in a chic tote. (Photographed here: MISCHA initialed jet set tote (HK$1,280 + HK$175 monogrammed service). An obsession turned into a successful entrepreneurial venture, Michelle is those lucky few who got it right from the very beginning.
